Welcome to Meat Draw Books.
I’m D. Grant Black, a seasoned writer-editor, former magazine publisher, communications hack and unemployable creative who decided to start an independent, non-fiction commercial imprint in Western Canada to create innovative books in small batches.
Books that I want to print, not what censorious arts-funding organizations have decided publishers must print to comply with arts funders’ stringent guidelines, which often result in churning out more mediocrity — and pulping unsold books. Books where independent-minded writers can share a diversity of opinions with their readers — because without freedom of speech and artistic expression, art is dead. Those kinds of books. And lots of funny books and fun travel & lifestyle books. But all non-fiction books. And sold directly to the reader.
I consider Meat Draw Books to be a ‘daring adventure.’ My partner, Patricia, opened a fortune cookie in front of me at a Chinese restaurant that proclaimed: “Get ready for a daring adventure.” Author Helen Keller once summed it up even better with “life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”
A meat draw, in case you haven’t participated in one, is a buy-a-ticket-win-a-chance to-take-home-a-whack-of-meat. They tend to be held at Royal Canadian Legions where a carnivore raffle prize is highly valued. Canucks call them “meat draws” and the Yanks, usually at American Legions, call them “meat raffles.” I like this rudimentary lottery tradition to fill your freezer with protein plus the word “draw” signifies life’s lottery.

I publish non-fiction titles for adult readers. Humorous memoir, satire, travel, sport, food & drink, essay anthologies with specific themes, self-help, graphic novels and illustrated novelty books with specific themes.
I hope you enjoy what Meat Draw offers: small batch non-fiction books — produced independently & sold directly to readers — and proudly Made in Canada. Get ready for a daring adventure.
